The Rock Interview


GF: For those people who didn’t see the movie for some odd reason what is your mod about?

Cortex: A commando, under the commands of the Hummel General, hero of the war of Viêt-nam and that of the Gulf, seizes thirteen missiles containing a terrifying gas. Then it invests the fort of Alcatraz, fascinating as hostages 81. Pointing its missiles on San Francisco, he threatens the American government of a fatal bombardment, requiring twelve million dollars in the 36 hours, in order to compensate the families for the soldiers who, in charge of secret missions, were abandoned with their fate. The F.b.i. study the question with the assistance of Stanley Goodspeed, expert ès armaments, and they come to a conclusion: the only man who could help them is John Patrick Mason, the only man who is escaped prisoner of Alcatraz, locked up with the secrecy since about thirty years, and which knows by c?ur the underground topography of the rock.

Their commando approaches in Alcatraz and slips into the undergrounds. With the wire of many disputes, the soldiers are exterminated in turn: Mason and Goodspeed are found only vis-a-vis with the men of Hummel, at whom the dissensions increase as the term of the ultimatum approaches.

GF: Its obvious that I don’t need to ask what inspired you to make this mod but what are the appealing aspects of making a Mod about a movie?

Cortex: 1st, the scenery, the rock story is really cool, lot of action, and some different target for the heroes, then, there are lot possibility to make a mod from this movie, the player can be a marines or special intervention force, with that, we can do 2 different mods, the first, a single or coop mod where the players are Sean Connery or/and nick cage, against the computer, for the moment, we are working on this part, and a only multiplayer mod, where the commandos fight against marines, it will be certainly the 2nd part of the rock mod.

So, for the single/coop mod, we are trying to make the same ambiance as the movie, I want that the player become an actor, and not a simple player who are shooting all moving bodies! To do that, Our mapper are working hard to do realistic cinematics sequences.

GF: How similar will your mod be to the movie?

Cortex: We want that the mod like the movie, all weapons, characters, maps, and the goal of our 2 or one players, destroy the rockets, kills all marines and save hostages! The cinematics sequences will give a movie ambiance to the mod !

GF: Will the mod be both single and multiplayer?

Cortex: the mod is a cooperation/single mod, after, if the rock part 1 is appreciate from the public, we will make a better multiplayer version of the mod.

GF: What previous projects have you or your team worked on before?

Cortex: I was the leader of tactical-intervention mod, it’s a cs-like, but I leave them one year and half ago, after I join the hl rally team to make some cars for us, and now I’m in the hl runaway team as a simple modeller check their web site here: www.hlrunaway.com it’s a cs/swat like.

GF: Will you port to the TF2 engine and if so what new features will you add to the game that you cant that you cant do using the existing HL engine?

Cortex: Yes, I think the rock mod ill move to the tf2 engine, we cant know what we will be able to add for the rock mod part 1 with tf2 possibility, but for the part 2 ( multiplayer ) I think it will be great, big communication option, but valve are so secret about this game J

GF: What has been the overall feedback that you have received so far?

Cortex: Everybody encourage the team to the best of us :=) I never heard some negative guys

GF: How many weapons are you going to include in the first release?

Cortex: so, weapons are one knife, 2 grenades, 1 M4m203 ( grenade launcher ) M4 carbine, M16a1, 2 mp5 D, one with a scope, ump 45, 2 beretta 92 ( one with a mag light ) 1 colt 1911, M60 machine gun, RFA panther sniper rifle, I think there is nothing else J

GF: Will the objectives be the same as in the film and what other challenges will you have to face?

Cortex: The real objectives of the movie is destroy the rockets, but in the mod, u must kill all marines and save all hostages.

GF: Are you trying to make this a thinking game with a little bit of action or will it be action all the way?

Cortex: our target is action, speed and movie reference, make the player like an actor, There will be some thinking part, it did the half-Life success! But the target is make a fun mod, Cs is more funny that realistic...

GF: Obviously to make a mod around a movie is going to take a long time and the maps would have to be huge. What’s the development time going to be on this mod?

Cortex: I think there 1-1.5 years of developing, that’s why we are certainly going to move on the tf2 engine

GF: After you have done the first release what will future releases be like? Will they mostly be bug fixes or will you try and incorporate more weapons and other features into the game?

Cortex: when we will release the first version, it will be the last version of the rock mod, after, we will develop the 2nd part

GF: Personally I haven’t seen many mods that are based around movies. Do you worry that you have chosen quite a hard mod to develop?

Cortex: I think u forgot matrix J but no project ve been released, I don’t think it’s a hard challenge, just one difficulties, make the same ambiance like the movie, but make a “simple “ solo mod is so hard as a movie mod
