Desert Crisis Interview
Desert Crisis Interview

GF: Please state your Names and Postions in the Desert Crisis Team.

LPlasma : Leader, Animator, Textures, Modeler, Level Designer

Spongerock : Co-Leader, Webmaster, 2D Design, Textures, Weapon Skinner, Player Skinner, Modeler, Level Design

GF: How long have you been working on Desert Crisis?

LPlasma: Since the dawn of time. Or around spring 2000 officially, when Sponge was brought onto the team before then not much was done and it wasn't much more then an idea really.

SpongeRock: I've been working on DC for about 2 years or something give or take a few months. Pretty much ever since this evil slave slaveholder named Lplasma lured me onto the team.

LPlasma: Quiet, or i'll throw you in the well again. >

GF: What is the general theme/story of Desert Crisis?

LPlasma: Desert Crisis is a mod set in the near future, so there is a mix of modern weaponry (such as Desert Eagles and MP5's) and futuristic weapons (such as laser sniper rifles and plasma cannons). Desert Crisis features a modular objective system which gives the mappers _TOTAL_ freedom. They can link objectives as well, so you could, for example, shoot the VIP and take his briefcase. It is totally up to the mapper, they can even specify if they want rounds or not. The objective system also works with Half-Life's trigger system, so events can be triggered by the objectives. For example, you could capture the flag, and buildings could explode, it is totally up to the mapper.

The mod also features a character selection system similar to old-school paper RPGs. You choose your body-type, weapons, and perks (such as extra adrenaline, nightvision and so on). This way, your character is a reflection of your playing style. Also, not only can you customize how your character is equipped, but how he LOOKS as well. DC features a unique character customization system wherein you can pick skin color, accessories (hats, hair, glasses, etc.). There are literraly THOUSANDS of possible combinations. This mod will be one of the first games where u can recognize someone by how they look, not just the name at the bottom of the screen.

Desert Crisis is a pulse-pounding over-the-top war simulation. The focus is on having a great time, and using some of the coolest weapons to do it. We are not striving to be realistic, as we believe this simply limits what we can do with the modification.

GF: What will be some of the main Gameplay features in Desert Crisis?

LPlasma: The objective system is one of the biggest gameplay influencing things, since every map can be different, any objective, and any combination of objectives, it's insanely powerful. And i'm the entity b@#$h so i get to do most of the objectives for the maps. The character selection system is the other big one, everyone can entirely customize their character in their equipment, special abilities and even how they look

GF: Will the game be as realistic as possible when first released or will it be unrealisitc?

LPlasma: it's a mix between realism + 'sci-fi', so it's a blend between the two. It's not like TFC where your weapons are useless, but it's not ultra realism by any means Spongerock: dc isnt set on realism, you can take a few shots but its nothing like tfc's damage system

GF: What Inspired you to create such an obviously great game?

Spongerock: Well it all came to me one day while praying to budha for guidance.

LPlasma: Monkeys, cheese, pie, muffins, sugar cookies, caffinated beverages (dew, bawls, etc.), sci-fi movies, action movies, and being bored out of my f*#king mind at school.

GF: Have you ever met any body famous in the Modding Community that kept you going?

LPlasma: I have met some people like Payback, Gooseman, (valve), the flf team, the holy wars team, the fa team, the opera team, the wanted team and some other ppl, but they didn't 'keep me going' it was just kind of neat. Payback is from ahl btw.

Spongerock: I have never met anyone in person from the mod community and what inspired me to go on, were.. the beatings, nothing else, i hate games, i wish i could just read all day.

LPlasma: And he's now helping on DC btw.

Spongerock: doomaniac from flf/ahl is also working on dc

GF: Are you close to beta release and if so do you think it will be a hit or gradually build up a fan community?

LPlasma: We are relatively close, it's pretty much just code + testing left. And i have no idea if people like it, i don't really care about how many fans we get, just how good

Spongerock: We already have a pretty strong community, and once we release, i think we will gain a strong following (strong doesnt mean large though), who knows how many people will end up dling + playing it.

GF: What are some of major changes/modifications to the Half-Life Engine?

LPlasma: Breaking the animation and submodel limits by quite a lot (especially submodels.) and the 3d character selection system and realtime blending of the models is damn nice. Slides on pistols move, shotguns actually pump, the breach opens on the m79, all that, quite nice

Spongerock: Pretty skins

LPlasma: and actually the player models are composed of two different models, neither have animations, those are pulled from a different model. it's a nice and complex system, and i love it!

GF: I like your flame thrower its nice take long to code?

LPlasma: It hasn't really been a focus, more of an 'oh yeah, fix that ikkyo!' (our coder). It's all based on the particle system we have in DC used for precipitation (rain/snow) and the flame/plasma streams

Spongerock: If we threaten ikkyo enough, he will code jut about anything

GF: Thankyou LPlasma and Spongerock you were most entertaining interviewees.
